Community Leadership Messages

Fulton County has one of the highest rates of new HIV infections in the country but it also has the commitment to change this. Working together with the community a Strategy to End AIDS in Fulton County has been developed and is now being incorporated into the plans to End the HIV Epidemic.

The first Black Mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson, dubbed us as "The City Too Busy to Hate." Yet, our metropolitan community has allowed stigma, shame, discrimination, poor leadership, and no overall coordination to lead us to become one of the last cities in America prepared to reverse the devastating tide of the HIV epidemic. In this new day of a re-dedicated federal strategy to End The HIV Epidemic, a stronger community collaboration and engagement effort, as well as the decision to adopt and become a part of the Fast Track Cities Initiative, we have our best chance in a very long time to turn the tide on this latest wave of new infections and preventable deaths. We now have a roadmap, we have resources and we have a destination - and with our Fast-Track Dashboard, we have the information and the navigation to get us there faster. Atlantans will not be left behind, and will get to the end of this epidemic together in our city and with the rest of our country.

“HIV hasn’t limited me in any way. I wake up every day and take my diabetes medication and other meds, but I don’t even think about having HIV, maybe because I don’t have any bad symptoms. In spite of all the things that are wrong with me, I live life to its fullest.”

Late Atlanta Activist
