Community Leadership Messages

"Several people have told me that the virus is not important, but it is not like that, I hope I can help many people protect themselves and not go through what my family and I have gone through.

We need to provide more openness, love and consideration for the people of our community. I firmly reject the discrimination amongst ourselves in the LGBTQ community. People living with HIV become victims of these type of discriminatory acts. We must begin to unite as a community to achieve real improvement, where we can accept each other, no matter where we come from, who we are, where we are going … We need to accept ourselves.”

“At first you think 'I'm going to die', and from that moment many things start to change in your mind. Later, as you inform yourself, since you start to really see the picture, you realize that living with HIV is like living with any other chronic degenerative disease. I had to make some changes in my habits.”

“Despite the advances, there are barriers that make it difficult to end the HIV epidemic. Many things have changed in twenty years, people’s perception of the illness has changed, people see this not as a serious illness but as a chronic disease. But I think what persists is a stigma on how it was acquired: this has to do with your sex life, it has to do with the bad, the dirty, the sinful. People have learned to discriminate without being so obvious; Before they said, 'do not come in', today you come in but there are certain restrictions. There are always other ways to exclude people. Those who work with patients must be much more careful. A whole series of discriminatory ramifications persist.”
