Community Leadership Messages

We must remain steadfast on our path to Ending the HIV Epidemic in SC by refocusing on three main objectives, which are: i) identify the 16% of SC residents estimated to be living with HIV who do not know their status and rapidly link and retain them in care; ii) look for the 30% of residents living with HIV who are presumed to have fallen out care and re-link and retain them in care; and iii) actively identify residents who are at high risk for HIV infection and link and retain them on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and other evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for preventing HIV. We must maintain focus on and complete this triangle of objectives if we should end HIV here, which we must . . . and will!

Ali B. Mansaray
Director, Division of STD/HIV & Viral Hepatitis
Bureau of Communicable Disease Prevention & Control (BCDPC) SC Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC)

Every person living with HIV infection deserves the ability to access highly effective treatment in a setting that offers understanding, appreciation, and respect. I believe that the collaboration of people and entities who share this belief, who are willing to combine and be guided by data encouraged by the 90-90-90 goals of the Fast-Track City Initiative, will help us jointly find new ways to realize this access to care for all those who would benefit.

Dr. Eric Meissner, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases, Director of HIV and Hepatitis Patient Care and Research
Medical University of South Carolina

Charlestonians are proud of their historic and vibrant city, and we are proud to be at the forefront of ending the HIV epidemic by becoming a Fast-Track City. From the mayor’s office, to the front desks of our clinics, we are all committed to working collaboratively to improve testing, provide treatment, and prevent transmission of HIV among our friends and neighbors.

Aaron O'Brien, MPH
Quality & Development Manager

As a Social Worker with the primary goal of addressing the needs of high-risk populations, including people newly diagnosed with HIV throughout the region, I was very excited that Charleston had become one of the first Fast-Track Cities in South Carolina. As a Fast-Track City, Charleston has become one of the leading forces in creating opportunities to build strong collaborations with partners who are committed to ending the HIV epidemic. These efforts are evident in collaborations such as the Tri-county Sexual Health STI Prevention & Education Initiative (SHAPE). SHAPE is a non-profit organization of dedicated community partners that consist of residents, healthcare providers, and volunteers who aim to reduce HIV and STI rates across Charleston, Dorchester & Berkeley counties, by engaging in coordinated, evidence-based initiatives and fostering a community-level approach to treatment and prevention efforts. We are confident that our concerted efforts to align our mission and vision with that of our city will help meet the needs of our community: one test, one life, and one partner at a time.

Shanna Hastie
Preventative Health Social Worker, Lowcountry DHEC
Director, Tri-county Sexual Health STI Prevention & Education Initiative (SHAPE)
